Mise En Scene

In my previous lesson we was learning about Mise En Scene. Basically Mise En Scene is a french term meaning what is put into a scene or frame visually.

Mise En Scene communicates essential information to the audience , its visual information !

Key Elements

Key elements include :
- Settings & Props
- Costume , hair & make up
- Facial expressions & body language
- Lighting & colour
- Positioning of the characters/objects within the frame
- Composition

Set Design

Set design includes :
- Settings & location , play important views on the background
- Sets are either built from scratch , or the crew find an ideal setting that already exists ( e.g. Desert )
- Settings can manipulate audiences by giving them certain expectations.

In the lesson me and a friend were asked to describe the Mise En Scene about a conventional Sci Fi movie , here are a few things we came up with :
- Space ships - Space suits - Laser guns - New technology - Planets - Extra terrestrial equipment - Backgrounds will usually be CGI due to the demand for space and new planet's , or a big open space will be needed.

After this we decided to go into more detail about the key elements on Mise En Scene to give us more of an understanding here are some of the points we made :

Costumes , Hair & Make up

- Costume , Hair & Make up act as an instant indicator of a characters personality/job.
-It can also can tell us the time frame
- Costumes can signify individuals( Superheroes )

Facial Expressions & Body Language

- Facial expressions show how an individual is feeling
- If someone is smiling we can assume they are happy , but if music or sound was added it could show insanity ?
- Body language indicates how a character feels him/herself or towards another

Composition

- Positioning within a frame can draw our attention to an important character/object
-A film maker can use positioning to indicate relationships between people/characters

Lighting

- Used to highlight important objects or characters
- Used to make characters look mysterious
- Used to reflect a characters mental state

Low Key :

- Sharp contrasts
- Deep shadows
- E.g. Horror films

High Key :

- More filter lights are used
- More natural light used
- Produces brightly lit sets or a sunny day
- E.g. Romantic Comedies

Three Point Lighting

And thats my lesson on Mise En Scene i hope you find the information provided useful and interesting , if you any feedback i would appreciate it , thankyou ! :)
