Openening Credits Analysis of The Conjuring

Open Credits Analyse for Conjuring ?

The genre  in the opening credits is established very well. It is clearly a horror straight away from the music played , the music is very much sad and tense , it causes you to feel cold in a way . The music could be seen as something that would be played in a babys room which we instantly see as scary.

The setting seems to be in a dark room or in some kind of room where people are looking through murder cases with several families , due to the pictures and stories given. This again sets a horror genre and can also set he feel of narrative as it could suggest that it is about people being murdered. One part of the Mise en scene is newspaper articles. One of the articles clearly says ‘Haunted Artefacts Museum’ this word haunted instantly gives a feeling of ghosts which could allow the audience to consider what the movie will be about.

The lighting used is very much low key and adds an effect to the pictures as they are black and white. There is not much to be said about the setting of the credits as there are only pictures used.  The composition is very out and old.

There is a picture of a house in one of the pictures that shows a location for the play , the picture has a noose on the tree hanging down which obviously demonstrates murder from the use of a noose. There is characters shown in the pictures which could be dead or alive we do not know.  It shows many pictures of families with children , we instantly see children as scary.

The props used are very much old pictures and papers that are being edited with names and some faces are even blanked out demonstrating that they could be dead.

The sound is very spooky it gives an airy feel and has sounds of chimes . The picture at the end is very strange and just gives the whole firms such a good standing point. It has a picture of a house with a tree which you may seem very simple. Then as another sheet comes over a noose is shown tied to the tree which completely changes the mood of the ending of the credits , it shows a normal house suddenly turns scary due to one thing in a scene . It demonstrates the narrative idea and the genre , with the characters being shown in the articles before .

The sounds used are non-diegetic these are sounds added on. The target audience of the films seems to be fans of horror as it does seem very scary and disturbing especially from the picture of the possessed doll. The age of the audience I believe would be around  16-25 as it has some very disturbing images that could give children bad thoughts.

Overall the opening credits may seem very simple but I believe they are very effective , they add a very good sense of the narrative and allow you to get a feel of the disturbed nature of the film. The film was directed by James Wan , the joint producers Peter Safran , Rob Cowan and Tony DeRosa-Grund also it was produced at New Line Cinema. I know this from the titles used.

One last point in that they way they used low key lighting to make the titles more effective through only really have one filler light to show the detail on the pages.

The opening credits are very good and they allow you to get a feel for the film and the information needed about all producers in the matter of 2 minutes 3 seconds.
